Early in my career as a senior house officer I had the opportunity to work with an inspiring and charismatic group of respiratory consultants at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin. Although the service was a busy one, I was well supported and there was always time for teaching. The draw to the specialty was the vast breadth of subspecialties within respiratory medicine. You could choose to have a hands-on career with an interest in intensive care medicine or interventional bronchoscopy, or more of a hands-off career in some of the less acute areas.
