I forgot to come—Patients who miss their outpatient appointments in general practice or at hospital waste time and money. They tend to be young, and when asked why they didn’t attend give simple lapse of memory as the most common reason. Reminders by text message to mobile phones was suggested as a sensible way to reduce missed appointments. Unfortunately, a controlled trial in an inner city general practice found that it made no difference (Quality and Safety in Health Care 2008;17:373-6, doi:10.1136/qshc.2006.020768).
Left handed hemispheres—Left handed people may be more self conscious about doing or saying what they want than right handed people, Scottish researchers have found (Personality and Individual Differences 2009;46:20-4, doi:10.1016/j.paid.2008.08.019). The study compared 46 left handed people with 66 right handed people and found that the left handers scored higher on scales of inhibition. This is thought to be a result of differences in the dominant hemisphere.
