Happy 60th birthday NHS
“When I was asked to write a poem for the NHS [National Health Service] it was almost like [getting] a present,” said Michael Rosen, The United Kingdom’s children’s laureate, at the launch of his poem, These are the Hands, on 4 December as part of the 60th anniversary celebrations of the NHS.
Born in 1946, just before the NHS itself, Mr Rosen says that he has his parents to thank for his enthusiasm for the NHS. He remembers them telling him how, before the days of the NHS, they and their neighbours used to “save pennies to go and see a backstreet doctor who might have been good or bad.”
