News in brief: June 2009
Late April’s outbreak of H1N1 swine flu may have been largely contained in North America, but a pandemic is still imminent, and governments should not let down their guard, the World Health Organization has said. Michael Ryan, WHO director of global alert and response, said that it was probable that the organisation’s alert phase would be raised to 6, meaning pandemic disease.
“At the present time I would still propose that a pandemic is imminent, because we are seeing the disease spread,” he said. “At this point we have to expect that phase 6 will be reached; we have to hope that it is not reached.”
He said that the organisation would send more than two million courses of antiviral drugs to the world’s poorest countries to help them prepare for the continued spread of the virus (http://in.reuters.com/article/worldNews/idINIndia-39382020090502).
