What a lot of people don’t realise is that ear, nose, and throat (ENT) surgeons are actually ENT physicians who also operate. In fact, 80% of our patients will not have an operation so there is considerable outpatient assessment, diagnosis, and treatment—similar to ophthalmology and dermatology. A small proportion will of course need surgery. The exciting thing about the operating part is that it ranges from the truly awesome major head and neck cancer surgery down to neonates with airway problems. Those who are more neurologically inclined could specialise in balance disorders, which is almost completely non-surgical. Like most surgeons will tell you though, outpatients is probably the price you pay for being allowed to operate on people, although I love paediatric clinics. Again like ophthalmology, we tend to be overworked with outpatients—that is, too many patients per hour—creating dissatisfaction all round for patients, doctors and nurses.
