Forty years on
An open letter from the class of 1969 to the class of 2009

The headmaster in Alan Bennett’s play Forty Years On is increasingly surprised at the different standards of the next generation of boys. One generation has to be very careful about presuming to speak to another, but at the 40th year reunion of our year at Glasgow, issues emerged that we would like to share with those who will have their 40th year reunion in 2049.
We celebrated the 40 years of progress since our graduation. The class of 1969 has surely experienced a golden period of progress in medicine and growth in health care. To us it seems impossible that this rate of progress could be repeated even though we recognise that the same might have been said to us by our predecessors in the class of 1929.
