Modernising Medical Careers and working abroad
Modernising Medical Careers has affected UK doctors volunteering to work for Médecins Sans Frontières
Throughout 2007 the international medical charity Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) realised that doctors were becoming increasingly concerned about the impact that Modernising Medical Careers (MMC) would have on their ability to work abroad with MSF and on their skills and career development options.
MSF decided to investigate the effect of the MMC programme on doctors’ opportunities to work abroad and to identify skills acquired from working abroad and the value of these in their work for the NHS. This article highlights the results of the research involving UK doctors who have worked for MSF in the past 10 years.
Working in the complicated and challenging environments in which MSF delivers its programmes helps doctors to consolidate and develop invaluable skills that are transferable and add value to their NHS work. I hope that this article will encourage debate in the UK medical community at a time when changes to broaden
