“Seven months pregnant and still breaking the law and doing drugs–this woman is scum.” “She doesn’t deserve the baby.” “I don’t think this child should have to grow up with a ‘mother’ like her.” “She should not see her child until it is 10.”
The quotes above are just a sample of the many comments left on a message board by readers responding to an article in a Devon newspaper about a pregnant heroin addict. She had been found guilty of burglary and then begged the judge to imprison her for her crime in the hope she would have less access to heroin. Her aim was to be drug free for her unborn baby by the time she left prison. Although crime can never be condoned and using heroin while pregnant is far from ideal, the comments board seemed over-run with a lack of understanding, anger, and remarks to fuel
