When you have a passion for something you make time for it, and it becomes easy to prioritise it. Coming from a non-medical background also helped. It may have been more natural for me to have developed my other interests because I was not in an environment where I was constantly exposed to medicine.
I never planned the media side of things; I never knew the career option existed. All I saw was what my predecessors had done—get into a training post and off you go. One day a friend asked me to go on the news and talk about a medical topic. After that I was spotted by other media professionals who saw me as a doctor who could speak well about health issues. It snowballed from there, and I realised that there was a need for this.
