How Hollywood has predicted the future

Hollywood has often served as a predictor of science to come. Here we take a look at recent advances in medical technology that have been presaged by the silver screen.
Dystopian sci-fi movie Gattaca (1997) shows a world where genetic testing is ubiquitous and almost instant. This has led to humanity being divided into the valids (those with healthy genes) and the in-valids (those at high risk of certain diseases), with in-valids being denied jobs and treated as second class citizens.
Daybreakers (2009): it’s 2019 and the world has been hit with a plague of vampirism. Only a few humans remain, and the vampires are faced with a severe shortage of human blood. The only solution is to develop artificial blood; unfortunately their current best efforts cause the recipient to react badly and ultimately to explode.
