Tony Redmond: a professor in international emergency medicine
Tony Redmond talks about surgery in Haiti and disaster medicine
I led a medical and surgical team from the United Kingdom that responded quickly to the earthquake. We were funded by the British government, and teamed up with the British non-governmental organisation (NGO) Merlin (Medical Emergency Relief International), an Irish NGO called Goal, and a local Haitian NGO. Together we set up a tented hospital facility.
It’s mixed really. When I was invited to join the United Nations disaster assessment and coordination scheme the only line in the job description was “must have a high tolerance for ambiguity.” I think that sums it up.
