Smoking cessation pioneer: Ian Campbell
Ian Campbell received an OBE for services to respiratory medicine
I won it for services to medicine and, specifically I think, services to respiratory medicine. It came as a surprise and I feel flattered and pleased that my efforts have been appreciated in higher places. I’m sure there are many others who have done as much, but I’m delighted I’ve been given the honour.
Well, there was no opposition, but there wasn’t much enthusiasm for it because it wasn’t “magic therapeutics”—and it’s usually magic therapeutics that attracts doctors. It wasn’t a new technology or a new drug—in other words, it wasn’t terribly sexy—but gradually the members of the British Thoracic Society who were chest consultants came on board.
