Lucy Mathen: From journalism to ophthalmology
Lucy Mathen gave up her career as a journalist to retrain as an ophthalmologist and set up a charity
I chose it because the ophthalmologists seemed to be the happiest doctors at St George’s, and because after my first sight of the optic disc seen in full magnified splendour with an ophthalmoscope, I was hooked.
Oh there is too much work to do yet for me to feel proud. I’ll feel proud only when we have managed to eliminate the backlog of people who are unnecessarily blind in the state of Bihar. But we will do that. That’s for certain. And by 2020.
