The days when a senior house officer could sample a variety of specialties before deciding on one are gone. Just 16 months after qualifying junior doctors must decide which of the 59 medical specialties in the UK to follow.1
The UK Foundation Programme Office has introduced taster weeks. These give the trainee a glimpse into life as a doctor in that specialty. Taster weeks usually consist of five days taken from the foundation training study leave allowance.
