Students make my job difficult, yet more satisfying
It was my second month as a foundation year 1 doctor on a respiratory ward, and I was starting to feel as though I was getting to grips with the job. I had established a good routine of updating the list, chasing the bloods, and summarising the patients before the ward round. I was even making time for a coffee break with the other junior doctors.
So my heart sank one Monday morning when I entered the doctors’ office to find three medical students lurking there—all with notepads at the ready. I hoped that they’d be final year students, therefore a useful addition to the team and perhaps even a source of knowledge from their finals revision. Unfortunately for me, they were all starting third year, and were on their first placement, new to the hospital environment, and with little clinical experience.
