General practice placements have been an integral part of undergraduate medical training for a long time, particularly in the clinical years of the course.12 It is probably the only healthcare setting where all the disciplines of medicine are covered under one roof—for patients with both acute and chronic healthcare needs.3 General practitioners enjoy the excitement of not knowing what will come though the doors of their consulting rooms and need an extensive set of skills to deal with a hugely diverse patient population—from vaccinating a baby to caring for an elderly patient with dementia. Moreover, GPs also have the privilege of getting to know their patients and families well, even across several generations.
Whether your ultimate career aim is to become a GP or a specialist, exposure and training in community medicine are essential. General practice placements are an excellent environment to hone your clinical skills and to experience healthcare
