Medical students often say that they chose medicine to make a difference, and there’s no doubt you will end up making a positive impact on your patients’ lives. However, one thing that readers tell me they think is that by the time they graduate they will be powerless to change anything about the organisation they end up working for.
Perhaps this is not surprising because the NHS is the largest employer in the United Kingdom and the fifth biggest employer in the world. Change can be hard work in such colossal organisations. However, the NHS as your future employer faces several challenges to its survival, and it needs your help. The Five Year Forward View is the vision—set out by Simon Stevens, the chief executive of NHS England, at the end of 2014—of how the NHS needs to change to overcome these challenges. In short, it will require new ways
