A medical elective is your opportunity to experience more about a country than the average tourist would and learn about a specific patient population and a healthcare system outside your home country. Most students have a great time on their electives and gain new skills, insights, and friends. However, being in unfamiliar surroundings and without your usual support network can expose you to risks. As part of a study investigating the risks of being on an elective abroad I analysed reports and interviewed medical students about their experiences. This article gives some tips on how you can prepare for and stay safe on your elective.
