When is the best time in your career to start a family?
Planning a baby is not like planning a holiday, or even a wedding. Some couples are lucky enough to conceive the first month they try—but for many others, the issue of timing is much less straightforward. I had a client who had read that children born in the start of the school year (September) have an academic advantage over classmates born in the summer. She planned to conceive in December, to ensure her baby arrived in September. Several years later, still without a baby, she wouldn’t care what month of the year her baby was born.
Doctors tend to be highly organised and focused, so it can be a shock when family plans are more complex than originally planned. Babies can be conceived quickly or may take longer to arrive. And it can be helpful to be quite flexible in one’s thinking about this from the outset.
