Student BMJ and the BMA to host free “applying to medicine” event on 19 September 2016
Student BMJ and the BMA are hosting a free “applying to medicine” event for pupils in years 12 and 13 on 19 September 2016 to inspire the next generation of doctors in the UK.
The event will include talks from doctors, medical students, admissions tutors, and careers advisers. It aims to help delegates understand what a career in medicine involves and to demystify the process of getting into medical school.
The event will run for half a day at the historic premises of BMA House, Tavistock Square, London and talks include:
- How to be sure you want to study medicine
- How much it costs to study medicine and what help you can get with the costs
- Choosing the right medical school for you
- What work experience to get, and how
- How to write your personal statement
- What to expect at your medical school interview and how to prepare
- Your options if you don’t get into medical school first time around.
There will also be breakaway sessions where attendees can meet practising doctors, who will give accounts of their day to day work, and medical students, who will explain what it is really like to study medicine and offer tips for getting into medical school. There will also be an opportunity to meet expert patients who will share their perspectives on what it is like to live with a long term condition and what they think defines good and bad care from healthcare professionals.
Matthew Billingsley, editor of Student BMJ, said “We’re building on the success of the applying to medicine event that we’ve held at the BMJ Careers fair in the past two years [2014 and 2015] and this event promises to be even bigger and better. We’re delighted to be teaming up with the BMA to bring this event to BMA House and to open the book on how to begin a career in medicine.
We’re looking forward to welcoming hundreds of sixth form students from a variety of backgrounds and giving them access to experts and practising medics, which we hope will give them the very best chance of succeeding with their applications.”
