Liaison psychiatry is a subspecialty within psychiatry that provides psychiatric assessment and treatment for patients who might be experiencing distress on medical wards or in the emergency department.
The liaison psychiatry team—which usually comprises psychiatrists, specialist nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, and clinical psychologists—does not take over the care of a patient, but works alongside a medical ward team.
