Mother Clap's Molly House is a play about men … in dresses. This bawdy musical drama, the disclaimer warns, contains language and scenes that “some may find offensive.” A similar disclaimer applies to this review.
Written by Mark Ravenhill, who wrote the 1996 hit play Shopping and Fucking, Mother Clap's Molly House is a camp comedy of gay sexual manners through the ages. It sets out to reflect the diversity of human sexuality and to explore our need to form families, and while it celebrates homosexuality, it targets the commodification and commercialism of sex.
It has attracted much attention and plays to full houses. It has also provoked little outrage, which may seem surprising given its scenes of simulated sex and musical numbers with well enunciated upfront lines that include “shit on them who call it sodomy, we call it fabulous.”
