I was as shocked as anyone when, in September 1998, actor Michael J Fox announced that for the past seven years he had been giving the performance of his life; hiding Parkinsons from the world. Looking at films or the highly acclaimed sitcom Spin City, all made during this period, there seems to be nothing wrong with the popular actor whose only ‘disability’ previously was being ‘vertically challenged.’ On the initial reading of his recollections its all too easy to forget the peculiar circumstances surrounding his condition for, unlike all the textbook cases, he was just 30 years old when the diagnosis was made.
What follows is not the ‘obligatory’ soul searching and sympathy seeking often found in the autobiographies of more minor celebrities, but a simple and honest account of his life both before and after young onset Parkinsons was confirmed. Surprisingly, his condition is not the main focus
