Virtual medical school will soon be a step

A plan to create the first “virtual” medical school is now a step closer to reality. The project is being led by the University of Dundee and involves all five Scottish medical schools as well as other leading medical schools in the United Kingdom, North America, and Australasia.
The International Virtual Medical School (IVIMEDS) project could be one means of providing training for the hundreds of extra doctors needed in the United Kingdom. The government has pledged to increase the current number of medical graduates by 54% by 2008, but, despite the opening of several new medical schools and the introduction of graduate “fast track” courses, it will be hard pressed to meet its target.
The project would pool the expertise of its member institutions, as well as making the most of new learning technology to deliver a flexible medical education to participating students. Under the proposals, it would provide
