Liberian aid appeal launched as medical crisis deepens

As the humanitarian crisis in Liberia spirals, the United Kingdom has launched a multimedia emergency aid appeal. Coordinated by the UK disasters emergency committee (DEC), money raised from the Liberia crisis appeal will support 11 of the United Kingdom's best known charities and allow them to scale up their aid work.
Brendan Gormley, chief executive of the committee said, “The appalling conditions caused by the climax of the bloody civil war in Liberia will lead to widespread deaths without an urgent increase in the aid effort. Immediate financial help from the public can ensure that the DEC agencies will be able to step up their vital work quickly.”
Liberia has been ravaged by civil war since 1989 when Charles Taylor led a revolt against then president Samuel Doe. Taylor's rebel faction then went on to win the 1997 special elections. Violence has escalated over the past three years as attempts
