Oscar Wilde reputedly lay on his death bed sipping vintage champagne. When asked why, he replied, “Isn't it obvious? I'm dying beyond my means.” Sixty years before, Wilde's father was training at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, just around the corner from John Snow. Snow beat Hippocrates to the title of greatest doctor ever in Hospital Doctor's 2003 survey. Snow famously removed the handle from the water pump in Broad Street and in doing so curbed a cholera epidemic that was ravaging the heart of London.
Last year Wilde's work was revived, with Reese Witherspoon and Colin Firth filming The Importance of Being Earnest. This year it was Snow's turn to have his work recognised; the United Nations declared it the international year for fresh water.
