Athletes risk addiction
- By: Richard Hurley
Many student athletes have problems with at least one form of addictive behaviour, and men are more susceptible than women, found a recent study (The Sport Journal 2004;7(2)).
“Student athletes face a unique set of challenges and stresses to achieve academically and athletically… People with addictive behaviour are at risk from affective disorders, criminal behaviour, ethical misconduct, absenteeism, and problematic relationships,” the researchers said.
The researchers did not ask students who do not play sports to complete questionnaires and are uncertain as to whether student athletes are more prone to addictive behaviour than non-sporty students.
