>> Men in couples who are trying to have a baby may soon be advised to take folate supplements just like their partners. Researchers looked at the asspciation between concentrations of dietary folate. zinc, and antioxidants and the prevalence of sperm aneuploidy(Human Reproduction Mar 19;doi:10.1093/humrep/den036). They found that participants who had a high dietary intake of folate (greater than the 75th percentile) had a reduced risk of aneuploid sperm.
>> A study carried out in the emergency department at Southampton General Hospital has found no benefit in screening attending patients for hypertension (Emergency Medicine 2008;25:196-9).
A randomised controlled trial of almost 400 patients found that those who were screened for hypertension and advised to seek follow-up with their general practitioner were no more likely to be taking antihypertensives six months later than patients in a control group.
