Watching the 1999 boat race (Oxford students versus Cambridge students) proved very difficult. For 10 months I had trained hard in the hope that I would be selected for one of the crews. I raced with Oxford University Boat Club at Henley in July and at the national rowing championship three weeks later in what was to be the final event before the summer break.
