Earthquake in Turkey
I was on call on the psychiatric ward that night, asleep in the house officer\'s room, when suddenly I felt myself being shaken violently awake. Half asleep, I strained to hear if any of the patients had been disturbed as well. Not hearing anything, I turned around and went back to bed, thinking that it must have been another one of those mild earthquakes that strikes Ankara on and off. In the morning, I woke up to find that the electricity and water had been cut and the duty nurse was looking very distressed. She had heard over the radio that a large earthquake had hit the northwestern part of Turkey and that there was some damage. It wasn't until much later in the day that the magnitude and scale of the earthquake became clear.
