Student BMJ Review: January 2008 issue

The Student BMJ is a magazine I read regularly, some issues with more attention than others. I am glad to say that this month’s has been one of the most thought-provoking and relevant ones.

This month’s Student BMJ calls us to see the bigger picture: by discussing public health initiatives, offering glimpses of medicine around the world, and even touching on migration and on the impact of globalization on healthcare. The editorial was good; it pulled together related articles and presented them cohesively. It may have been too good—articles who didn’t fit the theme (e.g. “Is it all right for women to drink small amounts of alcohol in pregnancy?” and “Too old to treat?”) seemed to stick out by comparison.

The articles were well written, though some arguments seemed a little weak. Too often, I have found myself biting back words and generally disagreeing with the authors on several matters. I content myself with writing rapid responses that may or may not get sent. I am convinced that many other medical students feel the same and look forward to reading their responses.

This month’s Education is particularly nice—interesting and practical. I also liked the regular parts of the magazine. They are always amusing. Picture quiz deserves special mention: succint, memorable, and high-yield.

I enjoyed reading and reviewing the January issue of Student BMJ. It is always a pleasure to review a job well done.
